Funny, how...okay, not funny; sad.
American Evangelical Christians are proud to send their sons and daughters to Iraq and Afghanistan where they might well "die for their country". They [we] celebrate their serving, their sacrifice, and we parade them before friends, family and church.
Yet... I know very few who would be so proud, so excited, well, to send their sons and daughters to live sacrificial lives where, if sent to the Middle East, SW Asia, Africa, places in Asia, they might well die for the Kingdom.
By the way, this Kingdom is eternal and the King actually worthy to die for.
Lord, may we, your church, awaken from political religion, from national faith and theology and rediscover the radical, scandalous Messiah, who calls us to lives lived shrewd as wolves, gentle as lambs, and living sacrifices.

good insights Mike
I actually don't know too many families who are "excited" about sending their son's and daughter's into harm's way (of any type). Proud, hopefully... terrified, certainly... but not pleased or excited as you seem to imply. I suspect, as an evangelical, I would actually feel similarly proud and terrified if my grown children were to make sacrificial choices of service for the Kingdom. I think you have overstated your case in an effort to make a point. I also think your critical view may soften if one day your adult children make sacrificial choices putting their own lives (or the lives of your grandchildren) in danger. You may be proud... but also worried, sobered, fearful and prayerful... much like the families of our servicemen and women, OR of mission minded families on difficult assignments.
Thanks Hub,
Appreciate your comments. First, I served and know the dangers. So I speak from experience. Overstated - making a point that is not too far lost when I see so many of us "evangelicals" so for war... wearing red, white and blue...yet treating God and the church as much a consumer transaction as going to Target. Not so sure if I overstated tooo much.
I have adults sons and know the reality well.
Thanks for your comments
